Chapter 18 - Evil Drums

“Boomerangs.” Gypsy Lou murmured with half-closed eyes.

“What?”

“You’re thinking of boomerangs. They come back.”

A new wind scattered some of the overflowing ash across the table and the chill seemed to sober the drinkers. Between gusts the air hung heavy and close upon their skin, thousands of pores prickling open in an uncomfortable sweat.

The Moroccan seemed to have noticed Kifkef now and were shooting loaded glances at his back, muttering amongst themselves. They had put pay to several bottles of wine and seemed to be in a dark mood. Kifkef seemed quite unaware of their presence, however, and cracked his thumbs as he leaned forward in a conspiratorial whisper.

“I feel that we have the lost the edge to our stories. We talk of wisdom, love and learning --But there are two sides to the coin of this world of the Creator. And it can only befall us ill if we forget the flip side - Poison-laced though it may be. For if we do not acquaint ourselves with the sinister, the evil and the dangerous, then it may be that they will choose to acquaint themselves with us.
