How to give a 5 minute talk

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion with us at the 5 Minute University!

It’s a community project to bring people together, awaken curiosity and stimulate thought.

But no one expects you to be a professional speaker. It’s a really kind, welcoming audience and they just really want to hear what you have to say.

Here’s how to help them :)

A few guidelines

  1. Begin your talk with a statement or a question. Something like: “why do we need to sleep anyway?” And then answer it at the end.
  2. Aim to say 3 things during your talk. 3 points that you want to get across to the audience. Any more than that and you risk overloading them. Less is more.
  3. Try to give an example for each of your points. Bring your ideas to life.
  4. Practise and time yourself. It’s a strict 5 minute limit.
  5. No electronic media is allowed but you can use physical props.
  6.  Take your time. Don’t rush. Enjoy the attention :)

And that’s it. Please turn up on time so we know all our speakers are there :)

We’ll be there from 16.30 and the event starts at 17.00.
