How to give a 5 minute talk
![]()
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion with us at the 5 Minute University!
It’s a community project to bring people together, awaken curiosity and stimulate thought.
But no one expects you to be a professional speaker. It’s a really kind, welcoming audience and they just really want to hear what you have to say.
Here’s how to help them :)
A few guidelines
- Begin your talk with a statement or a question. Something like: “why do we need to sleep anyway?” And then answer it at the end.
- Aim to say 3 things during your talk. 3 points that you want to get across to the audience. Any more than that and you risk overloading them. Less is more.
- Try to give an example for each of your points. Bring your ideas to life.
- Practise and time yourself. It’s a strict 5 minute limit.
- No electronic media is allowed but you can use physical props.
- Take your time. Don’t rush. Enjoy the attention :)
And that’s it. Please turn up on time so we know all our speakers are there :)
We’ll be there from 16.30 and the event starts at 17.00.
